If your tooth has been severely damaged by your lack of oral hygiene or periodontal disease, and can’t be fixed, ask your dentist for a tooth extraction. As the name suggests, tooth extractions consist of removing a tooth from its socket. Typically, your treatment is provided by a general dentist or oral surgeon and allows you to follow a plan to ensure optimal healing results. There are two main types when it comes to tooth extractions: a simple extraction and a surgical extraction.
Simple extractions
Simple extractions are typically done on teeth that are visible above the surface of your gum. Your dentist will use a tool called an elevator to remove the designated tooth. Once the tooth is loose enough, the dentist will use forceps to rock back and forth the tooth until it is separated from the socket. The common reasons for performing a simple tooth extraction are teeth that have suffered trauma and are crowded together or have deteriorated.
Surgical extractions
If you are dealing with a more severe case, such as impacted wisdom teeth that have not grown incorrectly the dentist can then perform a surgical extraction. If a tooth is fractured below the gum line and has to be removed in fragments or if a tooth is badly decayed to the extent that forceps can not remove the tooth from its socket, it would be more common reasons why you would need a surgical extraction. As the name implies, the dentist makes incisions within the gum line to perform the extraction properly.
