Managing Dental Anxiety

Dental pain has always been a fear for people going to the dentist. Fear of dental pain in fact is so severe for individuals, they wait to seek dental treatment until their issue has severely worsened. This is a problem, because like any health complication, the more it worsens, the harder it is to heal. Luckily, dentists are turning to using sedation methods to ease their patient’s anxiety.

Anesthetics come in a variety of methods. From numbing shots, for the minimal anxiety driven patients to IV sedation for the more severe. These methods are used on a regular basis by dentists to ensure their patients seek dental attention before their oral issues get worse and more serious.

When you seek treatment, in most cases, the numbing shots will work well with one or two applications.  If you are already in pain when you visit the dentist, the shots will put your mind at ease and stop the pain almost immediately.

If your fear is tremendous and you simply cannot stand the thought of getting the numbing shot, then you may be interested in laughing gas or IV sedation.  Either of the two can help you relax before you the dentist applies numbing shots.  Laughing gas is a sedative doctors use a lot, because of its effectiveness and safety.

IV sedation is an option that can either keep you conscious or put you out totally.  Typically, IV sedation is preferred during wisdom teeth removal, as most people don’t want to hear the extraction noises.

Get over your fear of the dentist. It is so important to ensure you get dental help if you are experiencing toothaches or any other pains in the oral cavity. If you are a sufferer of dental anxiety, let your dentist and their staff know prior to your treatment, so they can administer the proper anesthetic for you.

Schedule an appointment at your earliest convenience, at the start of any pain. It is important to have any dental issues looked at, as they may turn more serious.
